Holders Algeria are booted out of AFCON, Ghana console themselves

Defending champions, Algeria have been booted out of the Africa Cup of Nations at the group stages after defeat to Ivory Coast in their third game of the competition in Cameroon.

The 2019 champions join Ghana as former champions to be eliminated at the first round of the 2021 AFCON.

Algeria finished last in Group E after losing 3-1 to fellow favourites Ivory Coast at the Douala stadium on Thursday evening.

The Ivorian started in blistering mode after Frank Kessie broke the game’s deadlock in the 22nd minute. The AC Milan star connected to a cross from Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe.

Ibrahim Sagnare doubled the lead before the break and after half time Nicolas Pepe put the game beyond the Desert Foxes with a sublime finish.

Algeria had the opportunity to pull one back immediately but Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez missed the penalty.

However, Sofiane Bendebka made amends after grabbing a consolation with 17 minutes remaining.

The defeat meant it was the end of the road for Alegria, who join Ghana as the big countries out of the tournament.
